CAC/Café Talks

The CAC is proud to present a new series of talks by internationally renowned intellectuals.

On the first Wednesday of every month commencing in April, the CAC will be bringing luminary critics, curators, philosophers, and writers to Vilnius to talk about topical issues in culture, economics, and politics impacting on the production, presentation, and reception of contemporary art.

The talks are to be held in the relaxed social atmosphere of the CAC Café with the aim of facilitating open discussion about issue raised in the talks. This is one of a number of initiatives launched by the CAC intended to fire debate about the situation of contemporary art and culture in Lithuania.

CAC/Café Talks are an opportunity to find out more about the expanded field of contemporary culture in which the CAC operates.

Dieter Lesage: Art, Populism, and Democracy

 

In the struggle against populism (and any discussion ‘on’ populism believes itself to be part of the struggle ‘against’ populism) it is difficult to not give in to populism oneself. It is a condition that challenges art and politics equally: raising the question what can we do to resist it?

Dieter Lesage is a lecturer and research coordinator at the Department for Audiovisual and Performing Arts RITS (Erasmushogeschool Brussels) and visiting professor at the Piet Zwart Institute of the Willem De Kooning Academie in Rotterdam. Lesage publishes mainly within the fields of philosophy of culture and political philosophy. He is the author of several books including: Discourse on Resistance: politics in times of globalization, Amsterdam/Antwerp, Meulenhoff/Manteau, 2004; Black Thoughts On Belgium, Antwerp, Dedalus, 1998; and was co-editor of Populisme, Berchem, EPO, 2004; and The Nation as a Museum: from colonialism to globalisation, Brussels, Yves Gevaert, 1999.

Dr. Niels Werber holds the position of Professor of Social History and Culture at the Institut für Germanistik of the University of Ruhr in Bochum, Germany. His areas of specialisation include history of 17th to 20th century German and European literature, 17th and 18th century poetics, and aesthetics of the period around 1800. More recently he has been researching the literature of new media environments (film, television, hypertext), and the discourse of German geopolitics in self-descriptions since the mid-19th century. His latest publications are: Love as a Novel, Fink, München, 2003; and Communication/Media/Power, Suhrkamp, Frankfurt, 2002.

„MUTATED VOCALS“ is evening dedicated to the phenomena of vocals and electronic music. Prominent pioneers and producers of experimental, minimal dub, Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus (Basic Channel, Berlin), will play endless pulsating metallic sound tunnels and vocal supernovas together with reggae vocalist Paul St Hilaire.

Borrowing the name of diva Donna Summer, who rocked the world with synthesized sexual fantasies in 1977, Jason Forrest will blur any border between digitalia and turntable sound worlds. Actively sampling disco, prog-rock, digital noise, gabba (“bleeding nose” techno), drum-n-bass etc., he stands out as the most frenetic mixer of all the music archives since the invention of the laptop.

Especially for this evening new projects will be staged by Lithuanian performers – covering found sound from the street to techno rhythms. PB8 will perform a duet with a performer found on the night, and Dublicate will invite Puma from Riga. Also present will be low-tech vocalizing expectations of localized subcultures of the hip-hop scene: MC‘s (Despotin projiktz') and beatbox (Def One) will be complemented by hotwired DJs with hi-tech electronic sources.

“Mutated Vocals” will have an open microphone for vocalists in the audience during the evening. Hopefully the idea of the pioneer of sonic fiction Kodwo Eshun: “you are an alien you are looking for”, will mutate to the even more productive slogan: “you are the vocal we were waiting for”.
